Designing Icons That Convey Meaning Universally

DAAS is a service where both users and technicians can request, replace, and overall manage their devices. The overall goal of the platform is to give all types of users (regular user, manager, and tech) a simplified and intuitive experience to do their tasks.

Timeline: 2 Weeks
Tool: Adobe Ilustrator

The challenge

The issue arose from the fact that the product catered to individuals of various languages, yet it exclusively offered English support initially. The icons had to effectively convey the necessary actions to users, even if they couldn't understand the captions due to a lack of English proficiency.

The solution

This posed a significant challenge for users who weren't fluent in English. To overcome this, a two-week project using Adobe Illustrator was initiated to design icons that would override language barriers. These icons needed to convey actions and functionalities effectively without relying on language.

The Process

The process of designing these icons was a delicate balance of aesthetics and practicality. I worked to ensure each icon was visually appealing yet universally understandable. This process emphasized the importance of empathy and understanding the diverse needs of users. The result was a set of icons that acted as a universal visual language, transforming the DaaS platform into an inclusive space where technology bridged linguistic gaps. Through this experience, I learned firsthand the power of design thinking and the impact of empathy-driven solutions. The illustrated icons highlighted how design can solve real-world problems while fostering inclusivity. As I continue on my design journey, I carry forward these lessons, using empathy and innovation as guiding principles to create meaningful solutions in an interconnected world.
